Methodology
Public health surveillance at scale is an information architecture problem. WHO, CDC, and national ministries publish outbreak event data — but that data is fragmented across RSS feeds, API endpoints, and PDF bulletins, with no unified geocoded layer.
This dashboard aggregates three live public sources into a single structured, map-ready dataset — refreshed on every page load. Locations are resolved from report text to the most precise available coordinate: health zone centroid, city, or country centroid as available.
This is precisely the kind of data infrastructure Varona AI builds for government health agencies and global implementers operating in high-stakes environments.
Varona AI is ready to ingest surveillance data directly from regional public health laboratories, hospital networks, and national health information systems. We are equipped to normalize, standardize, and de-identify disparate data sources — including systems that expose data via FHIR R4 APIs — enabling real-time, county-level precision for this dashboard and similar decision-support tools.
Data Sources
| WHO Disease Outbreak News LIVE | Official outbreak event reports parsed from WHO's public RSS feed — updated within hours of a confirmed event. |
| ReliefWeb API LIVE | UN OCHA's humanitarian reporting platform, queried via JSON API for Ebola, Hantavirus, and VHF reports across East and Central Africa. |
| KEMRI CURATED | Kenya Medical Research Institute rodent reservoir surveillance and human seroprevalence study data — geocoded to county level. |
| WHO/CDC Historical Alerts HISTORICAL | Verified outbreak zone alerts manually extracted from WHO Disease Outbreak News bulletins and CDC public outbreak summaries — geocoded to health-zone centroid level. All locations correspond to documented, publicly reported events. |
